1. Quick Hits:
Thursday's padded practice was the first full practice held indoors at the Ochsner Sports Performance Center. Coach Kellen Moore mentioned it was scheduled before camp began being the second straight padded practice before a day off, and the next two practices will be outside Saturday and Sunday. … Moore also mentioned the team signed another punter, an undrafted free agent from South Carolina, Kai Kroeger. Kroeger impressed the team during an early week workout and now steps up the punting competition to three, along with incumbent Matthew Hayball and rookie James Burnip. With the addition of Kroeger the Saints released quarterback Hunter Dekkers. … Tight end Juwan Johnson was limited at practice Thursday, while tight end Treyton Welch and defensive tackle John Ridgeway III III did not participate. … Kicker Blake Grupe continues to have a rock solid start to training camp, nailing all five of his kicks Thursday, including a 51-yarder from the right hash and a camp long 53-yarder from the left hash (with Burnip holding). Grupe is now 19 of 20 with his kicks, with his only miss coming on Day 3 in a downpour outside from 48 yards.
2. Defense responds:
After Wednesday's offensive display during the outdoor practice, with chunk play after chunk play, it seemed the defense took umbrage and responded in kind Thursday. It was tough sledding all morning for the offense, no matter who was at quarterback. Time after time, the defense denied the offense first downs and would keep them out of the end zone until the very end of the practice session (more on that later). In 11-on-11 drills linebacker Nephi Sewell intercepted quarterback Tyler Shough on a ball intended for Cedrick Wilson Jr. that was tipped by cornerback Rico Payton. Later in red zone 11-on-11, defensive tackle Bryan Bresee batted down a third down attempt by Spencer Rattler after a fierce rush by defensive end Chase Young. One series later Shough was intercepted again, this time by safety Jordan Howden at the goal line on a back foot throw from the 20-yard line. Howden took it back the other way for big yardage. Rookie free agent from Wake Forest Jasheen Davis tallied two sacks, one of Shough, and one of Jake Haener, and nearly had another one (disputed heavily by Chase Young) that would have ended the practice. The running game was practically nonexistent, and lanes were hard to come by. All practice, the defense played with a ton of energy and with each passing stop, continued to get louder and louder on the sideline. The competition came to an exciting end as the final two-minute drill came to a close, leading into our Play of the Day.
3. Plays of the Day:
It seemed the defense was going to deny all three quarterbacks their opportunity to give their team the lead. Situationally starting at their own 40-yard line, 1:40 left in the fourth quarter, trailing 24-20. Spencer Rattler drove the team down to the plus-30 after eight plays but clocked the ball with three seconds left and no Hail Mary's were allowed. Shough's drive ended unceremoniously with a sack by defensive end Chris Rumph II (his second of the day) and a fumble which he receovered. Then it was Jake Haener's turn. After a controversial non sack (described earlier) Haener completed a tough throw and better catch by Dante Pettis down to the 40. Eventually the ball would rest at the 13-yard line with two seconds left, setting up the thrilling conclusion. One play for the win for either side. Haener took the snap, avoided pressure, and rolled to his right. As he neared the sideline he threw one toward the back of the end zone where receiver Mason Tipton was coming across, guarded tightly by cornerback Rejzohn Wright. The throw fell incomplete, and the defense celebrated. Unfortunately for them, however, the side judge threw a pass interference flag on Wright, drawing the ire of the defense and setting the offense up at the 1-yard line for an untimed down to practice. Haener again rolled to his right, and in a beautiful timing pattern, found Tipton at the back right pylon of the end zone for the winning score, igniting an offensive celebration and total disgust from the defense. It was a fun way to end the day as the team heads to a day off Friday.
