Key observations from Saints-Rams preseason game

Saints headed home after an ugly defeat

Check out the game action from the New Orleans Saints game against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 2 of the 2026 NFL preseason on Aug. 22 at SoFi Stadium.

Quick hits

The Saints faced the Rams at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif in their second preseason game. Game time temperature was 85 degrees at 1 p.m. Pacific Daylight time, though it felt much warmer at field level as there was little to no wind.

...The Saints started Zach Wilson at quarterback. The Rams started the game with Stetson Bennett.

...The Saints won the toss and deferred to the second half.

...New Orleans began the game with three consecutive runs to Kendre Miller who picked up 14 yards.

...Running back Devin Neal returned to action after missing the past week with a hamstring injury. Unfortunately, Neal left the game after his second carry of the day, went into the injury tent and then back into the locker room and did not return.

...Tight end Moliki Matavao made the most of his time on the field, hauling in 3 catches from Wilson, two of them converting on third downs. After Matavao converted on a 3rd and 2 with a 12-yard reception, he also visited the injury tent before heading back to the locker room with a towel draped over his head.

...Kicker Tanner Brown missed a 39-yard field goal with 32 seconds left that would have avoided the shutout.

A tough first half

The Saints have not had much success at SoFi Stadium over the years, be it regular or preseason against the Rams or the Chargers. The first half against the Rams on Saturday was no different. The Rams led 20-0 at halftime after controlling both sides of the line of scrimmage.

New Orleans hurt themselves with six penalties for 57 yards either stopping offensive drives or extending Rams drives on third down. The Rams had nineteen first downs to the Saints four, ran 47 offensive plays for 272 total yards and scored two touchdowns.  Zach Wilson also threw an interception, which led to the first Rams touchdown and gave Los Angeles a 10-0 lead.

Play of the day

In the Saints opening drive of the third quarter, the offense finally started showing signs of life. By the fifth play of the drive, the Saints looked at a 3rd and 8 at their own 18-yard line. Spencer Rattler dropped back and looked left, where wide receiver Jalen Moreno-Cropper was streaking down the left sideline. Rattler lofted a nice high ball that looked to be on target from the start. Cropper was able to make a slight adjustment and make the catch, keeping both feet inbounds for a 25-yard reception to the Saints 43-yard line, despite a defensive pass interference penally by Rams cornerback Cam Lampkin.

That play extended a drive that would take the Saints all the way down to the Rams six-yard line. Unfortunately, Rattler threw a pick-six to safety Alex Cook on a pass intended for tight end Treyton Welch. Cook hauled it back 100 yards to bring the score to 27-0.

The Saints will return to New Orleans late Saturday night and head back to the practice field on Airline Drive on Monday morning for the final week of Saints training camp.
