Saints quarterback Jake Haener warmed up pregame with a rugby ball. ... The Broncos won the toss and elected to receive. ... Kicker Blake Grupe led the opening chant prior to kickoff. ... The Saints first team defense opened the game, including Demario Davis, Pete Wener, Davon Godchaux, Chase Young and Carl Granderson, Defensive end Cam Jordan started the second defensive s.eries. None had played a preseason game until Saturday, and forced an opening three-and-out of the Broncos first team offense. ... The first team defense played the entire first quarter. ... Velus Jones Jr. continued to make a case for the 53-man roster with a long return of 39 yards to set up the Saints second field goal of the first quarter. ... Grupe, the camp and preseason MVP, continued his almost perfect preseason by nailing kicks of 56 and 49 yards in the first quarter, and another of 48 yards in the second quarter. Grupe after both first quarter kicks turned to the Broncos sideline and made his presence known. .... Running back Devin Neal got his first action of the preseason and got his first carry at the 5:40 mark of the second quarter and picked up five yards. Denver would win the game 28-19 to bring their preseason record to 3-0, while the Saints would end their preseason at 0-2-1.

Quarterback battle: Who did enough to earn the Saints starting job in two weeks against the Arizona Cardinals? Rattler started the game and played a quarter and a half, but his time in would go down as missed opportunities for him. He did lead two drives for field goals but was unable to convert on four third downs and the lone fourth down conversion attempt on a failed mini tush push. He threw behind wide receiver Rashid Shaheed on a pass that would have been a certain first down and possible touchdown. He also threw low on a pass to the right sideline to Chris Olave that instead of a first down turned into a third down and ultimately would turn the ball over on downs. Rattler was visibly frustrated when he was removed from the game in the second quarter when Tyler Shough took over. Rattler finished five of eight for 43 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions. He was sacked one time. Shough led an eight-play, 26-yard drive in his first action that led to the Grupe 48-yarder, including a third down conversion to Mason Tipton of four yards. Then Shough would really state his case at the 2:54 mark of the third quarter when he led the drive that would be our drive of the game. Shough ended his day 12 of 20 for 102 yards and an 11-yard rushing touchdown. We will find out possibly as soon as Monday who Kellen Moore will name as the starting quarterback for the season opener against the Arizona Cardinals on Sept. 7.

Plays of the Day: On third-and-10 from the Saints' 26-yard line at the 6:08 mark of the third quarter, Broncos quarterback Sam Ehlinger was under heavy pressure by Saints defensive lineman Vernon Broughton. Ehlinger threw it short and the ball was tipped by his own running back, New Orleans native Tyler Badie. The ball popped in the air and was intercepted by rookie cornerback Quincy Riley at the 30-yard line. ... At the end of the third quarter Shough led a masterful 12-play, 77-yard drive that took 4:41 off the clock. The highlight of the drive was on a third-and-five from the Broncos' 30 on the first play of the fourth quarter. Shough eluded serious pressure, spun out of trouble, and found running back Devin Neal on the right sideline for nine yards and a first down. Shough ended the drive four plays later with a perfectly executed RPO with a fake to Neal and ran untouched to the left and practically waltzed 11 yards into the Poydras Street end zone, showing the running ability that was successful for him at Louisville. Thanks to all for reading Takeaways all training camp and for the three preseason games. Enjoy the regular season!
