Game recap: Denver Broncos 28, New Orleans Saints 19 | 2025 NFL Preseason Week 3

Saints end preseason 0-2-1; quarterback decision pending

The New Orleans Saints ended their preseason slate of games with a 28-19 loss to the Denver Broncos on Saturday at the Caesars Superdome. The loss dropped the Saints to 0-2-1 in preseason. Denver improved to 3-0.

It was the last game for Coach Kellen Moore to evaluate the play of the quarterbacks competing to be the team's starter when the regular season opens Sept. 7 against the Arizona Cardinals.

Quarterback Spencer Rattler started and was five of eight for 43 yards. Rookie Tyler Shough entered the game in the second quarter and played the most snaps, completing 12 of 20 passes for 102 yards. He ran for an 11-yard touchdown and lost a fumble on a sack. Jake Haener played the last part of the fourth quarter and was five of nine for 37 yards.

For the three preseason games, Rattler was 30 of 43 for 295 yards with one touchdown and one interception while Shough was 36 of 53 for 333 with one touchdown, one interception and a rushing touchdown.

Against the Broncos, the Saints scored on three Blake Grupe field goals (56, 49 and 48 yards), a 52-yard field from Charlie Smyth and Shough's touchdown run.

Rookie running back Devin Neal saw his first action of preseason and had five carries for 20 yards and caught two passes for 10 yards.

Most of the starters played for both teams but the following Saints players did not suit up for the game: defensive back Terrell Burgess, tackle Taliese Fuaga, tight end Taysom Hill, tight end Foster Moreau, defensive back Rico Payton, guard Trevor Penning, defensive tackle John Ridgway III, cornerback Alontae Taylor and wide receiver Devaughn Vele.

Right tackle Landon Young left in the second quarter with a lower-body injury.

The Saints will return to the practice fields at the Ochsner Sports Performance Center on Monday ahead of Tuesday's deadline to reduce their roster to 53 players.
