Saints and Jaguars finish in a 17-17 tie

• New Orleans moves to 0-1-1 in the preseason after its 17-17 tie against the Jaguars in the Caesars Superdome. The Saints return to action on Saturday, Aug. 23 when they play the Denver Broncos at the Caesars Superdome, marking two straight home preseason games before the regular season. Kickoff is set for noon CST. The game will be aired regionally on the Gray Television network of stations in the Gulf Coast (WVUE-8 in the New Orleans area).

• The last preseason tie that New Orleans was a part of occurred in 1972 under Coach J.D. Roberts against the Houston Oilers, with the score being 14-14. The Saints had their last tie overall that season, a 20-20 tie at San Francisco on Oct. 22.

• The Saints captains for the contest were running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire, receiver Cedrick Wilson Jr., defensive end Jonah Williams and cornerback Isaac Yiadom.

• On the opening drive, rookie defensive tackle Vernon Broughton recovered a fumble by Jacksonville
quarterback Trevor Lawrence when the Jaguars were on the Saints' 16-yard line.

• Quarterback Tyler Shough started for the Black and Gold against Jacksonville and played the entire first half. He went nine of 12 for 66 yards.

• Quarterback Spencer Rattler took over in the second half and produced efficiently for the Black and Gold. He went 18 of 24 (75.0 pct.) for 199 yards with one touchdown and one interception while also rushing three times for 19 yards (two-point rushing conversion doesn't count in the rushing yardage total). He led the Saints to a touchdown, a two-point conversion and two field goals as well. The second-year pro led a nine-play, 82-yard drive in two minutes and 18 seconds to tie the score late in the fourth quarter.

• Wide receicver Mason Tipton continues to lead New Orleans in big plays this preseason, catching a 45-yard reception from Rattler. He was also the Saints' leading receiver in terms of yards with 100 on six catches (16.7 avg.). Wide receiver Dante Pettis and tight end Treyton Welch also contributed to the receiving effort with a combined six catches for 87 yards.

• Running back Velus Jones Jr.. led the rushing attack, recording four carries for 29 yards (7.3 avg).

• Running back Kendre Miller also put up a strong performance with six carries for 21 yards.

• Linebacker Jaylan Ford came up big for New Orleans again, recording his first interception of the preseason in the third quarter on a promising Jaguars drive. He also tallied two solo tackles.

• Cornerback Quincy Riley accumulated eight tackles (seven solo), both which led the team, a tackle for loss and a special teams tackle.

• Linebacker D'Marco Jackson, defensive back Ugo Amadi and safety Jonas Sanker also recorded five solo tackles each in the defensive effort. Sanker also recorded an interception at the very end of the fourth quarter to keep the tie against Jacksonville.
