Key Takeaways from New Orleans Saints vs Jaguars | 2025 NFL Preseason Week 2

Receiver Mason Tipton shows that he is a weapon

1. Quick Hits:

Sunday's preseason game vs the Jacksonville Jaguars was the first action in the Caesars Superdome of the 2025 football season. ... The Saints wore black jerseys with gold pants while the Jaguars wore white jerseys with white pants. ... The Jaguars' first-team offense was led by Trevor Lawrence, who was a solid nine of 12 for 66 yards, but he did lose a fumble on the first offensive possession at the Saints' 12-yard line after slipping on the turf. ... As a matter of fact, the footing all day seemed treacherous for both teams, as there were numerous slips, especially when trying to cut. Every season, the Dome turf is replaced, and there have not been any practices on it to try and "break it in" and it was evident Sunday. The footing usually improves as the season goes on. ... Rookie Tyler Shough played the entire first half for the Saints at quarterback, going nine for 12 for 66 yards and did not turn the ball over. He did lead the team in the second quarter to a Blake Grupe 51-yard field goal, on a drive that Shough was five of six, unfortunately the sixth pass was dropped on third down by wide receiver Chris Olave at the Jags' 20-yard line. ... Second-year linebacker Jaylen Ford continued his solid play with four tackles and a game-turning interception in the third quarter of Jaguar quarterback Nick Mullens deep in Saints territory on a pass intended for tight end Patrick Herbert. Ford had applied pressure on Mullens the previous play and dropped back into coverage on the third-and-4 and made the easy pick. ... The 17-17 tie with the Jaguars was the first preseason OR regular season tie for New Orleans since 1972, when Archie Manning was quarterbacking the Saints. The score was 20-20 vs. the San Francisco 49ers in a regular season game (thanks to New Orleans-based statistician Jeff Asher for that nugget).

2. Tipton time:

Well, it's official. Saints second-year wide receiver Mason Tipton is a weapon. We were hoping Tipton's big plays in training camp would translate to the preseason games and they certainly have. Tipton had six receptions for 100 yards including a 45-yarder from Spencer Rattler in the third quarter after play-action. He also caused a pass interference earlier before the catch of 45 yards that led to a Charlie Smyth field goal. He also came up huge in the final offensive drive that led to the ultimate tie. Tipton has taken advantage of the front-line receivers not playing extended time during the two preseason games and is proving to the coaching staff it's going to be very difficult to keep him off the field when the regular season begins.

3. Drive of the Game:

Pretty obvious here. With the Saints trailing 17-9 and just over two minutes left, Rattler had to go to work, and he did. Shaking himself off after throwing an interception in the red zone on the previous drive, Rattler engineered a nine-play, 82-yard drive that took 2:19 off the clock, leaving the Jags with 21 seconds remaining. Rattler was able to convert a fourth-and-2 at his own 26-yard line with a 16-yarder to Tipton, then another 26 yards to Tipton set the Saints up to get it in the end zone. Rattler still had to come up big on another third down, this time from the Jaguars' 20-yard line after a false start pushed it back. Rattler would hit Dante Pettis down the left sideline in the Poydras Street end zone for the touchdown. The Saints would go for two for the tie, and Rattler was able to see an opening to his right, and raced for the pylon and scored easily for the two-point conversion. Rattler was seven of eight on the drive, with the only incompletion an overthrow of Tipton in the endz one three plays prior to the Pettis touchdown. The tie was sealed when rookie safety Jonas Sanker intercepted a Seth Henigan pass with nine seconds left and took it down the left sideline. However, the clock expired when Sanker was forced out of bounds, and the Saints were unable to attempt a potential game-winning field goal.
