Saints wrap up California portion of training camp with joint practice against Rams

Thursday's joint practice vs. the Los Angeles Rams was held on the practice soccer fields of the LA Galaxy, at Dignity Health Sports Park. … The practice was conducted on two side-by-side fields with the Saints first- and second-team offense against the Rams first- and second-team defense on the north field, with the Saints first- and second-team defense against the Rams first- and second-team offense on the south field. … The practice consisted of regular pre-game warmups, team stretch, individual team periods and ball-handling. There were six 11-on-11 periods, including red zone, and finally two-minute drill. … There were also two separate special team periods of punt and kickoff return and coverage, but those periods were held with their own teams. … Safety Terrell Burgess, who was working as the slot corner, left practice after the first 11-on- 11 period and did not return, but remained on the sidelines with his defensive teammates in full uniform. … Spencer Rattler ran the first-team offense and had some nice throws to Rashid Shaheed, who caught a 20-yarder early, then blew by double coverage for a 50-yard touchdown catch. … Tyler Shough was the second team quarterback and had a 60 yard catch and run on a crossing route to the speedy Mason Tipton, who continues to make plays….Tight end Juwan Johnson was unofficially credited with five catches during the practice. … The Saints will travel back to New Orleans on Friday and prepare for their second preseason game back in the Caesars Superdome against Jacksonville at noon on Sunday.

2. Defensive standouts:

With action oin two fields I focused on the Saints defense against the Rams offense. … Jimmy Garoppolo led the first-team offense for the Rams, while the second team had Stetson Bennett IV at quarterback. … Garoppolo found the sledding very tough in the early periods, thanks to outstanding play by Saints linebacker Demario Davis who made several plays in run defense and his physicality, along with his fellow linebacker Pete Werner, so much so Rams Coach Sean McVeigh had "words" with Davis after one of the reps, but it was all in the competition. Defensive end Chase Young also had a monster day for the Saints, recording at least two sacks (and a possible third without the tackling) and three pass breakups. Two of those were at the line of scrimmage on batted balls, and the other was in pass coverage. Cornerback Isaac Yiadomalso had a nice day with a couple of pass breakups, including one of Pro Bowl wide receiver Davante Adams who ran a go route down the right sideline. Yiadom was with Adams step for step and was able to knock the ball down 35 yards downfield. … Cornerback Rico Payton also got credited with a pass breakup in the end zone against Bennett. Safety Jordan Howden had an interception after Bennett was flushed from the pocket, and under heavy pressure from Saints linebacker Isaiah Foskey, threw a wounded duck 30 yards downfield that fluttered and Howden came away with it for the turnover.
