The scoreboard was important, but secondary.
The New Orleans Saints completed their preseason with a 28-19 loss to Denver on Saturday in the Caesars Superdome, dropping their record to 0-2-1 in Kellen Moore's first season as head coach.
But the primary conversation was, and remains, who will be the Saints starting quarterback on Sept. 7, in the regular-season opener against Arizona in the Caesars Superdome.
In the final dress rehearsal against an opposing team, Spencer Rattler started and completed five of eight passes for 43 yards, and Tyler Shough came in and completed 12 of 20 for 102 yards, was sacked once and lost a fumble, and ran for 20 yards – including an 11-yard touchdown – on two carries.
Overall in preseason, Shough completed 36 of 54 passes for 333 yards and a touchdown, with an interception, and ran three times for 23 yards and a touchdown, and Rattler completed 30 of 43 for 295 yards and a touchdown, with an interception, and ran for 41 yards on seven carries.
Each showed the ability to rebound from adversity: Shough threw a touchdown shortly after throwing an interception returned for a touchdown in the preseason opener; Rattler threw a touchdown after tossing an interception in the red zone in the second exhibition; and Shough ran for a score after losing a fumble in the third.
Moore said a starter wouldn't be named until after the preseason finale, and remained true to his word.
"We'll go through this process," Moore said. "We'll study the film Sunday, we'll have those discussions and then at some point next week we'll make that decision and communicate with the players first and foremost, and we'll get it to everyone else as well.
"I thought there was a lot of good by the quarterbacks. There was a couple of missed opportunities, but I thought they were going through the right process. Both guys, I think, had some opportunities in there. Tyler had an awesome run down in the red zone, I thought he used his feet pretty well in this game."
Quarterback isn't the lone decision at hand; like all NFL teams, New Orleans must trim its roster from 90 to 53 on Tuesday. After roster cuts, teams are allowed to assemble practice squads.
"This is the most challenging week in the NFL," Moore said. "We've invested so much time in all 90 of these guys, they've put everything into this. This is everyone's hopes and dreams and aspirations, and we want that to happen to all of these guys.
"Naturally, you have to go from 90 to 53, bring 16 or 17 back on practice squad and we want to keep as many of these guys as we can in this organization, because we're going to need all of these guys. As the season goes on you're going to need a lot of guys to contribute. So there's challenging discussions to be had but this is a group that we root for and we're all in on."
Rattler started six games last season as a rookie, giving him more game experience than any quarterback on the roster. But that hasn't guaranteed him the top spot.
"That's not my decision to make," he said. "I just try put my best foot forward. I feel like as a group, we've done a lot of good things and are progressing in the right direction. Obviously, still a lot to work on as a group but I like the direction we're headed. We trust in each other and I think that's the biggest thing."
Shough, too, believes the offense has shown improvement.
"I feel like I'm fully capable to go out there and lead the charge," he said. "Obviously, I don't make those decisions. I feel like the whole team, the whole offense has continually gotten better. But for me, I feel really comfortable going in week to week and I'm excited to work on Arizona and we'll see what we're going to do."
Rattler led the offense on two scoring drives – 56- and 49-yard field goals by Blake Grupe – before yielding to Shough, who helped engineer a drive that resulted in a 48-yard field goal by Grupe and a 12-play, 77-yard touchdown that was capped by his run.
