New Orleans Saints announce roster moves

Mickey Loomis announced several roster moves on Friday

The New Orleans Saints have made the following roster moves, it was announced by the club today. The team has terminated the contracts of LB David Hawthorne, LB Ramon Humber and waived WR Seantavius Jones.

The club also signed CB Tony Carter and FB Austin Johnson. The roster moves were announced by Executive Vice President/General Manager Mickey Loomis.

Hawthorne played an important role both on the inside and the outside of the Saints defense since signing with New Orleans as an unrestricted free agent from the Seattle Seahawks in 2012. In his fourth season with the club, the former Texas Christian standout appeared in 11 games with five starts in 2015 while finishing with 33 tackles (9 solo), one forced fumble and four special teams stops. Overall in his seven-year NFL career, Hawthorne has played in 111 games with 83 starts and has totaled 652 tackles (417 solo), 12 sacks, eight interceptions, one returned for a touchdown, 22 passes defensed, six forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and 23 special teams tackles.

Humber came to New Orleans towards the end of the 2010 season and for the past six seasons has been a special teams standout, while also contributing on defense. The North Dakota State product appeared in 14 games during the 2015 campaign with four starts while registering 47 tackles (33 solo), one sack and one pass defensed on defense while also adding nine special teams stops. He has appeared in 92 career games with 18 starts, tallying 122 tackles (84 solo), 3.5 sacks, a forced fumble, four passes defensed and 75 special teams stops.

Jones appeared in three games during the 2015 campaign for the Saints playing primarily on special teams. He began the season on the active roster and spent the majority of the season on the teams practice squad prior to being resigned to the active roster for the final two contests of the season. A first year player from Valdosta State, Jones was inactive for final three games of 2014 season after spending first 13 contests on club's practice squad.

Carter, 5-9, 175, has played in a total of 45 games with three starts with the Indianapolis Colts, the Denver Broncos and the New England Patriots, posting career totals of 49 tackles, 19 passes defensed, five fumble recoveries, three interceptions and three special teams stops. Prior to joining the Saints on December 16, 2015, he appeared in three games for the Colts and recorded one fumble recovery during the 2015 season, he was released by the Saints on December 26, 2015 without appearing in a game. A native of Jacksonville, Fla., he started all 50 career games he played at Florida State University and totaled 139 tackles (104 solo), nine interceptions (173 yds.) and 26 pass breakups.

Johnson, 6-2, 240, completed his second season on the Saints active roster in 2015 appearing in 10 games with one start while being inactive for two contests. He finished 2015 with four carries for nine yards and one touchdown, while also registering five receptions for 30 yards. Originally signed by New Orleans in 2013, after spending his first season on the club's practice squad, Johnson has appeared in 17 career games with two starts and has rushed for 12 times for 31 yards with one touchdown and has caught seven passes for 45 yards and one touchdown. A native of Hickory, NC, he was four-year letterman and three-time Academic All-SEC selection at the University of Tennessee, he appeared in 43 career games for the Volunteers as a linebacker and posted 126 tackles (64 solo), one sack, 10 tackles for a loss, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, five interceptions and one pass defensed.
