The first practice of the New Orleans Saints' West Coast swing took less than 90 minutes to complete as the team engaged in mostly situational and special teams work. Rookie quarterback Tyler Shough handled the lion's share of the first-team snaps before the team split its work onto separate fields a tactic head coach Kellen Moore has been using to steal some additional practice snaps in the allotted time. Trevor Penning is entering the last year of his rookie contract at a new position with the Saints. The early returns have been positive. "We ran like a little sweep play, and all I see is Trevor (Penning) driving a guy into the dirt," said rookie left tackle Kelvin Banks. SEE MORE >>

Thursday's padded practice took place at Crawford Field at the University of California Irvine. The Saints spent a month here last year during training camp due to the construction of the cafeteria at the Saints facility. Both practice fields are Bermuda grass and orientate east to west. The temperature at the beginning of practice was 78 degrees under sunny skies, with a steady 10-15 mph wind coming out of the south southwest. SEE MORE >>
