Observations from New Orleans Saints training camp practice on Friday, Aug. 28, from the outdoor practice fields at Ochsner Sports Performance Center:

  1. IT'S OFFICIAL: Friday's full-pads, contact practice included an officiating crew. Coach Sean Payton said a crew would be on hand at several practices, an occurrence that happens each training camp (especially if there's a joint practice with another team).
  2. OL SHUFFLE: Rookie Cesar Ruizmissed Friday's practice, one of several prominent names to sit out. Ruiz, who'd worked at center for four consecutive practices, was replaced by Erik McCoy, who slid over from right guard. McCoy started at center last year. With McCoy's shift, Will Clapp stepped in at right guard, and since right tackle Ryan Ramczyk also missed practice, his slot was filled by several players, including James Hurst, Ethan Greenidge and Patrick Omameh. Among others who sat out Friday were running backs Alvin Kamara and Ty Montgomery, and safety Malcolm Jenkins.
  3. FRIENDLY FIRE: Linebacker Craig Robertson has taken it upon himself to heckle kicker Wil Lutz when Lutz is attempting field goals in practice. Ordinarily, he might not do it but this season is special. Since fans won't be in attendance – at least for games early in the season – most of the noise kickers will hear likely will come from opponents. So Robertson is giving his teammate a taste of what he'll probably hear during games.
