Councilmember Eugene Green and the City of New Orleans invite the public and media to join in a day of celebration honoring the extraordinary football career of New Orleans native and Saints safety, Tyrann Mathieu, on Thursday, August 21, 2025.

The day will begin with a Key to the City presentation at 12:30 p.m., recognizing Mathieu's outstanding contributions to professional sports and his positive impact on the New Orleans community. Immediately following, Councilmember Green and the New Orleans City Council will present special accommodations to Mathieu during a special order of business at the regularly scheduled City Council meeting at 1:00 p.m., in the Council Chambers at City Hall.

Tyrann Mathieu officially announced his retirement from the National Football League on July 22, 2025, concluding a remarkable 12-season career.

A proud product of St. Augustine High School, Mathieu earned national recognition as a four-star recruit and was ranked the No. 13 cornerback in the nation in 2010. He continued his athletic excellence at Louisiana State University, where in 2011 he was awarded the Chuck Bednarik Award, named SEC Defensive Player of the Year, and earned All-American and First-Team All-SEC honors.

"Tyrann Mathieu's achievements on the field are exceptional, but it is his resilience, leadership, and deep ties to our city that make this celebration so meaningful. He has inspired countless young people in New Orleans and beyond," Councilmember Green said.

Mathieu was selected by the Arizona Cardinals as the 69th overall pick in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft. After a year with the Houston Texans in 2018, he joined the Kansas City Chiefs, helping lead them to victory in Super Bowl LIV in 2020. In 2022, Mathieu returned home to New Orleans and played the final three seasons of his career with the New Orleans Saints.

Over his career, Mathieu earned three First-Team All-Pro selections (2015, 2019, 2020) and was a three-time Pro Bowl honoree (2015, 2020, 2021).
