TE David Thomas and S Paul Oliver Join Saints

Thomas has been with New Orleans the past two seasons. Oliver has played for San Diego the past four seasons.

The New Orleans Saints agreed to terms with unrestricted free agent TE David Thomas and S Paul Oliver today. The announcements were made by Saints' Executive VP/GM Mickey Loomis.

Thomas, a five-year veteran tight end, was acquired by the Saints in a trade with the New England Patriots at the close of the 2009 preseason and has been highly productive both in the passing game as well as in the run game. Thomas has appeared in 28 games with 16 starts with 65 receptions for 575 yards (8.8 avg.) and three touchdowns as a Saint. In 2010, Thomas appeared in 13 games with eight starts and caught 30 passes for 219 yards with two touchdowns.

A 27-year-old native of Plainview, Texas and graduate of the University of Texas, Thomas has played in 60 career NFL games with 29 starts and has totaled 86 receptions for 836 yards (9.7 avg.) with four touchdowns. He's appeared in seven postseason contests with four starts, making eight catches for 79 yards (9.9 avg.).

Oliver, 5-10, 210, was a fourth-round draft choice in the 2007 supplemental draft by the San Diego Chargers. The four-year veteran has appeared in 44 games with 11 starts for San Diego, recording 106 tackles (65 solo), three interceptions, six pass defenses, one forced fumble, three fumble recoveries and 20 special teams stops.

The former University of Georgia standout appeared in all 16 games with eight starts at strong safety for the Chargers in 2010 and finished with a career-high 60 tackles, one interception, one forced fumble, a career-best and team-high two fumble recoveries, three pass defenses and four special teams stops.
