Coach Payton pleased with practice

White Sulphur Springs, W. Va - The New Orleans Saints were back on the practice field Saturday for the first time since playing the Patriots on Thursday night. The team practiced in full pads. The practice was delayed for a short time early in the afternoon session when lightning forced the team off the field. Here are some observations:

  1. Coach Sean Payton seemed very pleased with the practice. The Saints worked with a nice tempo even with temperatures holding in the upper 80s. Payton liked his team's work which combined normal day-to-day training camp business and some clean up from things discovered in the New England film study.
  1. There was good news for the offensive line as Pro Bowl tackle Terron Armstead returned. His participation moved Andrus Peat to right guard for the better part of practice. The Saints also added a defensive back in veteran Cortland Finnegan. Payton said he sees him as a possible defender in the slot. Finnegan not only practiced, but also picked off a pass.
  1. Wide receiver Drew Brees had another very good practice. Cooks made plays in seemingly every full team period. John DeShazier of NewOrleansSaints.com and I have really noticed that if a defender can't slow or stop him in some way at the line, Cooks is going to win the battle.
