First quarter update:** The Saints and the homestanding Panthers couldn't get on the scoreboard in the first quarter Sunday. The Saints had one possession reach the Panthers' 28 before a sack of Drew Brees ended the possession.

The Panthers took their opening possession into the red zone before Malcolm Jenkins picked off Cam Newton at the 10-yard line.

Panthers receiver Steve Smith left the game with a knee injury and Saints safety Kenny Vaccaro was taken off on a cart with a left leg injury.

Key stats: Saints, Drew Brees, nine of 11 for 54 yards. Panthers, Cam Newton, two of four for 46 yards.
