Whether or not the New Orleans Saints have a game ball budget is irrelevant. Because if they did have one, Coach Kellen Moore would've blown through it after awarding 22 game balls following the last two victories against the Jets and Titans.
Game balls are given for NFL history: Taysom Hill became the first player in the Super Bowl era to top 1,000 yards passing, rushing and receiving with his output against the Jets.
They're given for personal bests: quarterback Tyler Shough had his first 300-yard passing game and cornerback Alontae Taylor notched his seventh career sack, most by a cornerback in franchise history, against the Jets; linebacker Demario Davis had six tackles which lifted him to a career-high 137 this season, kicker Charlie Smyth kicked 56- and 57-yard field goals, the first setting a career best and the second one topping it, and receiver Chris Olave caught eight passes for 119 yards and a touchdown against the Titans to raise his career highs to 100 receptions, 1,163 receiving yards and nine touchdowns.
They're given for game-changing plays: Defensive lineman Nathan Shepherd forced a fumble against New York.
Game balls are given and Saints players continue to give back to Moore — even after a rocky start in which New Orleans lost eight of its first nine games and 10 of its first 12.
A team that could have let go never did, and the Saints (6-10) have won four straight games entering Sunday's finale against the Falcons (7-9) at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
"It really starts with the person," Moore said. "We've got really high-character people, they care about their teammates — they're really, really good teammates. I think that's an important aspect of this thing. There's no finger pointing, there's no, hey, who do we want to blame for any particular downfall. It was purely focused on, how can I get better, how can we get better collectively?
"It starts with a lot of the leadership of our football team — the veteran guys, the guys who've been around here for a number of years, the guys we brought in that were veterans who have the right type of makeup. And then, the young guys learning along the way and following their lead."
Rookie left tackle Kelvin Banks Jr. agreed that having veteran team captains teaching and leading has been instrumental. But don't discount the head coach.
"It may sound simple to say, but he's definitely a player's coach," Banks said. "He listens to you... You give him an idea, he's going to take it in, he's going to listen to it and if he likes it, he'll put it in. He's just one of those guys. He understands his players, he understands what we're capable of and he knows what we can bring to the table. So he pushes us to that point every day.
"He let it be known — if you think you see something that could work or something that can help us win a game, don't be afraid to say it. He told us he'll never be the guy to shoot us down to an idea that we think is good for our operation."
While the ride was bumpy in the win-loss column, the message remained the same.

"I really think the struggle...it's been a blessing for our locker room looking back," defensive lineman Jonah Williams said. "When you're losing like that in the beginning, you stop looking at the result. Everyone wants the win but you stop looking at the result and you focus more on the process.
"There were games where we've lost and we still came in as a defense, (defensive coordinator Brandon) Staley walked us through the good parts of the game and just really focused on where we've got to get better. It wasn't all about the win or the loss. It built us up from that standpoint. Just coming together through those hard times, I think that's been a blessing.
"Kellen is probably one of the most level-headed coaches I've ever had, and I think that's a huge strength for the team. Through good or bad, he's just level. Very process-oriented."
It makes sense. Moore is the son of a legendary high school coach, played in college and knew early in his NFL career that he wanted to be a coach. Even after the Saints' early spate of losses — three were one-score defeats and the Saints felt they gifted a couple of the wider decisions — he emphasized process.
"There are highs and lows in everything," Moore said. "I think it's really important for these guys to find some consistency as we go through these NFL seasons. Hopefully, I can lead them by example in that fashion.
The ride smoothed considerably for New Orleans, in large part due to a cohesive locker room.
"It's been a great locker room," Hill said. "The reality is there's been no quit in anybody in that locker room, and everybody is still competing and playing for one another. It's a fun environment to be in. We know that the postseason stuff is off the table, but everyone is still cherishing every opportunity, and I think that that's pretty unique and special."
The game balls have been the cherries on top because they represent Moore's grasp and people skills, as he lists the accomplishment which earned the reward.
"If there's one thing about Kellen, he's a very aware coach," Hill said. "He knows what's going on and he knows how challenging this league is and I think he's got a really unique perspective for having played. I think he's got a different perspective from being in the locker room that way.
"He doesn't let those things just pass by. Our locker room and the recognition that he gives to guys for what they do is evident of that. I think everyone appreciates that about Kellen. It's one of those things that endears a player to him and a locker room, and people feel that and rally behind that."
