Sean Kelley's observations from final Saints minicamp practice

Special teams got a lot of attention Thursday

The New Orleans Saints wrapped up minicamp 2017 presented by Verizon with a 90-minute practice Thursday. The workout was the third and final for the week, and is the last formal gathering of the team until full training camp begins in late July. Here are some observations

  1. Coach Sean Payton spent a good deal of practice on some of those rare special teams scenarios. The team also worked on red zone and goal-line packages. With regard to the special teams periods, there's certainly a different feel under new coordinator Bradford Banta. We certainly will get more to observe with that important storyline during training camp.
  2. I'm eager to watch more of rookie safety Marcus Williams in August. There's something there; more so than I guess I thought I would see this early. No pads, minicamp reps, and other factors are keeping me grounded right now. Also at safety, Vonn Bell figures to be very important in his second season.
  3. Thursday saw the largest fan turnout of the week. It's nice to feel their collective excitement. It's nice to hear them spark up some otherwise mundane periods of practice. Training camp is back home on Airline this summer, and the fans will be a highlight feature all to themselves.
