Saints Training Camp 2025: Key Takeaways from Wednesday, July 23

Training Camp returns to Metairie with tempo, opportunity, and a whole new energy

1. Welcome back to Metairie

Last year, the sparkling new cafeteria on the Saints Airline campus was still under construction, forcing the move of the majority of training camp to Irvine, Calif. This season, with the cafeteria complete, we are back at the Oschner Sports Performance Center. For the first time in two years, Saints fans were able to see their favorite team in a training camp setting. The weather even cooperated as well, with temps only in the mid-80s, cloud cover and a steady northern breeze from 10-15 mph keeping things more than bearable for the players on the field. Linebacker Demario Davis called it "Welcome back to New Orleans weather." The practice itself only lasted an hour and 15 minutes as Saints Coach Kellen Moore mentioned after practice that Wednesday and Thursday would be the shortest practices of camp as they continue to increase the installation phase and workload gradually.

2. Up the tempo

One thing that WAS noticeable despite the short periods of 7-on-7 and team was the installation of tempo to the offense, something that Moore plans to use throughout every training camp practice and in the preseason and regular season games themselves. Moore was able to use tempo successfully when warranted as an offensive coordinator and these reps will not only benefit the Saints offense but also the defense, which will have to defend tempo throughout the regular season as the trend continues to increase year by year with teams who run it. As the practice length time increases and the reps increase for the top three quarterbacks it will be fun to watch how much time is spent on tempo in regular and two-minute situations. Of course, we will be tracking plays so we'll have a much better handle on who is getting those reps as the practices continue throughout camp.

3. Reps For everyone

One thing that Moore made clear at his introductory press conference was the quarterback battle eventually will come to a head before the regular season, with a lot of the focus leaning toward the first preseason game against the Chargers. However, it won't be just the quarterbacks who are going to split reps. We're going to see it with various position groups throughout training camp. For example, just because a certain player gets to work with the first team one practice doesn't necessarily mean that will happen the next practice, or the one after that. With practice time in today's NFL so limited by the Collective Bargaining Agreement reps are like gold, so all players must maximize their opportunity when they get them, and there will be opportunity the next couple of weeks here in Metairie and in Irvine leading to the first preseason game against the Chargers. Looking forward to bringing this article series back for now the seventh year. As the practices get longer, we'll bring back the old staples of the Quick Hits and of course, everyone's favorite, the Play of the Day. We'll see you Thursday!
