New Orleans Saints Executive Vice President/General Manager Mickey Loomis announced today that the club has signed cornerback Michael Davis and waived running back Velus Jones Jr. Additionally, the Black and Gold signed wide receiver Ronnie Bell and tight end Moliki Matavao to the practice squad and terminated the practice squad contracts of defensive end Garrett Nelson, tackle Sataoa Laumea and wide receiver Tommy Mellott.
Davis, 6 feet 2, 196 pounds, was originally signed as an undrafted free agent following the 2017 NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Chargers out of BYU. The Glendale, Calif., native has played in 122 career games with 76 starts for the Chargers (2017-23) and Washington Commanders (2024), recording 337 tackles (265 solo), eight interceptions (including one for a touchdown), 70 pass breakups, one sack, eight stops for a loss, one forced fumble, two fumble recoveries and 26 special teams stops.
In 2024, Davis appeared in 15 games with two starts for Washington, recording 10 tackles (seven solo), one pass breakup, and four coverage tackles. In four seasons at BYU (2013-16), Davis played in 48 games with 30 starts, recording 110 tackles and 17 pass breakups.
Bell, 6-0, 192, was originally selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the seventh round (253rd overall) of the 2023 NFL Draft out of Michigan. The Kansas City, Mo., native has appeared in 26 games for the 49ers, catching eight passes for 90 yards with three touchdowns. On special teams, Bell has returned ten punts for 70 yards, two kickoffs for 23 yards and recorded three coverage tackles.
In five seasons at Michigan (2018-22), Bell played in 47 games (31 starts) and registered 145 receptions for 2,269 yards with nine touchdowns. In 2022, he started all 14 games and set career highs with 62 receptions for 889 yards with four touchdowns, earning Third-Team All-Big Ten honors.
Matavao, 6-6, 263, was originally selected in the seventh round (248th overall) of the 2025 NFL Draft by New Orleans out of UCLA. The Henderson, Nev., native has appeared in three games for the Black and Gold this season, contributing on offense and special teams.
In four seasons at Oregon (2021-22) and UCLA (2023-24), he started 22 of 50 games and logged 74 receptions for 998 yards (13.5 avg.) with six touchdowns. In 2024, he was the Bruins' leading receiver, posting 41 catches for 506 yards and two touchdowns.
