New Orleans Saints Executive Vice President/General Manager Mickey Loomis announced that the club signed unrestricted free agent quarterback Zach Wilson. Here are five things to know about the Saints roster addition:
1. Experienced Backup with Denver Broncos and Miami Dolphins
Wilson joins the Saints after spending the previous two seasons as a backup for the Denver Broncos in 2024 and the Miami Dolphins in 2025. Wilson never saw the field with the Broncos, but appeared in four games for the Dolphins completing six of his 11 passing attempts for 32 yards.
2. Former Jets Starting Quarterback
After being drafted second overall in the 2021 NFL Draft, Wilson would spend the first three seasons of his NFL career with the New York Jets. He started in 33 games, completing 566 of his 993 passes for 6,293 yards and 23 touchdowns. He also added 93 rushing attempts for 498 yards on the ground and five touchdowns. He served as a team captain in both 2021 and 2022 and lead the Jets on five game-winning drives during his time with the team.
3. Former Player of the Week Recipient
Wilson earned AFC Offensive Player of the Week Honors in Week 14 in the 2023 season. Wilson quarterbacked the Jets to a 30-6 win over the Houston Texans, completing 27 of his 36 passing attempts for 301 yards and two touchdowns. "He was awesome," former Jets Head Coach Robert Saleh said. "I felt like he was extremely decisive. He played fast. There were a lot of 'oh crap' moments where he stayed within the moment, and he made things work. He made a lot of things happen on his own."
4. BYU Cougars standout
A three-year starter with the BYU Cougars, Wilson finished his collegiate career completing 566 of his 837 passes for 7,652 yards with 56 touchdowns. He added 212 rushing attempts for 642 yards and 15 touchdowns. Wilson played in 30 career games with 28 starts and became the youngest freshman quarterback to ever start for the Cougars.
In his final season with the Cougars in 2020, he ranked No. 2 nationally in points responsible for (264), passing efficiency (196.4) and completion percentage (73.5) as well as No. 3 in passing yards (3,692), passing touchdowns (33), and yards per pass attempt (10.99). His 73.5% completion percentage set a new single season record for Brigham Young, surpassing Steve Young.
5. Corner Canyon High School Star
A native of Draper, Utah, Wilson prepped at Corner Canyon High School. In his senior year with the Chargers, he passed for 2,986 yards and 24 touchdowns and ran for 752 yards and eight touchdowns. He was named 5A MVP and was selected first-team all-state, leading the school to an 11-1 record, the 5A state semifinals and a region championship. He also played varsity basketball in high school.
