Todd Graffagnini's Saints training camp observations for Tuesday, July 30

Saints bring in two with connections to New Orleans

1.      Local flavor: The New Orleans Saints brought in two players with local ties into camp Tuesday, July 30 with the additions of former LSU wide receiver Travin Dural and former Tulane and O.Perry Walker running back Robert Kelley. Dural was a member of the Saints last season before injury ended his season in training camp, while Kelley was reduced to two games a year ago before being placed on injured reserve with the Washington Redskins. Saints Coach Sean Payton mentioned that Kelley had to lose 15 pounds before they would bring him in, which Kelley did.

2.      The Butler keeps doing it: At the end of wide receiver/defensive back one-on-one drills Saints quarterback Drew Brees completed a 30-yard deep out to the right sideline to Emmanuel Butler despite the receiver being held the last 15 yards by cornerback Ken Crawley.

3.      Center shuffle: The starting center position, which has been a hot topic all offseason with the retirement of Pro Bowler Max Unger, has been considered a three-man battle by most observers but Tuesday all the snaps were split between rookie second-round pick Erik McCoy and fifth-year veteran Nick Easton. The next series of practices will be very important for both to continue to establish themselves as the first preseason game still is over a week away. Veteran Cameron Tom could still be in the mix as well. There is a long way to go before the season-opener.
