Todd Graffagnini's Saints training camp observations for Friday, Aug. 2

Red zone was the focus of practice

Action photos of New Orleans Saints Training Camp presented by Verizon on August 2, 2019.

1.      Red zone day: The New Orleans Saints worked extensively on red zone situations for the first time during training camp. Fans always seem to lean toward the offense in these drills, but as Coach Sean Payton told the media after practice, it's just as important for the defense getting this work which could be the difference between holding an opposing offense to field goals instead of surrendering touchdowns. Both sides had their own victories as the day progressed, which is what you want to see.

2.      National media day: The dignitaries were out in force during another warm morning at the Oschner Sports Performance Center. The NFL Network went live from the balcony overlooking the practice fields with Michael Silver and former quarterback David Carr while Peter King of NBC and current Monday Morning Quarterback author Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated made the rounds on the field during and after practice.

3.      Uncharacteristic Kamara: During the last red zone team drills, running back Alviin Kamara had two drops of passes out of the backfield. The second one a pass to the left sideline had him visibly frustrated as he slammed his right hand angrily into the Bermuda grass. For the sake of his hand and the Saints offense, let's hope we don't see that much more of that. My educated guess is, we will not.
