Takeaways from Sean Payton's Aug. 17 media availability

Coach Payton met with the media following Thursday's joint practice with the Chargers

The New Orleans Saints practiced in Costa Mesa, Calif., with the Los Angeles Chargers on Thursday, Aug. 17. The practice included a number of live team drills, cornerbacks vs. wide receiers and offensive line vs. defensive line.

Saints Coach Sean Payton shared his thoughts on how he felt after the first of two joint practices. "I thought it was OK," he said. "There were peirods that I thought were maybe better than others."

Rookie cornerback Marshon Lattimore was on the filed taking reps against the Chargers receivers. "He'll get more work tomorrow," Payton said. "Our plans are to play him Sunday."

The offensive line was tested Thursday as it faced the Chargers talented pass rushers. "It's a good test for your whole offensive line," Payton said. "(Joey) Bosa and a bunch of these guys do a good job of rushing the passer."

Payton was a bit frustrated with some of the mental errors made during live drills. "The first 2-minute drill we had five penalties," Payton said. "The turnover on offense... we had a couple of protection errors."
