New Orleans Saints vs. Washington Redskins connections

  • New Orleans offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael served as a quality control coach in Washington in 2001. Carmichael and Washington defensive coordinator Greg Manusky served on that same staff in Washington in 2001 and served on the same staff in San Diego from 2002-05.
  • Saints special teams coordinator Bradford Banta served as Washington's assistant special teams coach from 2014-16.
  • Washington running back Robert Kelley both played for New Orleans senior offensive assistant/wide receivers Curtis Johnson at Tulane University, when Johnson served as head coach of the Green Wave. Kelley prepped at O. Perry Walker High School in New Orleans.
  • Washington guard Tony Bergstrom and defensive tackle Stacy McGee played for New Orleans defensive coordinator Dennis Allen with the Oakland Raiders when he served as head coach.
  • Saints defensive assistant Leigh Torrence played for Washington from 2006-08 prior to joining the Saints
  • Washington running back Adrian Peterson played for New Orleans in 2017. Peterson was also teammates in Minnesota with quarterback Teddy Bridgewater and fullback Zach Line.
  • Washington wide receiver Michael Floyd went to training camp with the Saints in 2018 and was teammates in Minnesota with Bridgewater in 2017.
  • New Orleans defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins and Washington tackle Christian Geron Sr. and linebacker Josh Harvey-Clemons were college teammates at Louisville.
  • Washington kicker Dustin Hopkins joined the Saints practice squad late in the 2014 season and went to training camp with the club in 2015.
  • New Orleans tight end Benjamin Watson is a native of Norfolk, Va. Watson and Washington quarterback Colt McCoy were teammates in Cleveland.
  • Saints offensive assistant Joseph Brady played wide receiver at William & Mary from 2009-12 and then served on its coaching staff from 2013-14.
  • New Orleans assistant wide receivers coach Ronald Curry is a native of Hampton, Va.
  • New Orleans linebackers coach Mike Nolan served as defensive coordinator of Washington from 1997-99. Nolan served as Washington quarterback Alex Smith's head coach in San Francisco from 2005-08.
  • Saints quarterbacks coach Joe Lombardi's grandfather, Vince Lombardi, served as head coach of the Redskins in 1969, guiding them to a 7-5 record in his only year at the helm. Joe Lombardi coached tight ends and tackles at Virginia Military Institute in 1999.
  • New Orleans assistant offensive line coach Brendan Nugent played at Catholic University of America and served as an assistant coach at William & Mary from 2007-11.
  • Saints cornerback Ken Crawley prepped at H.D. Woodson High School in Washington, D.C., where as a senior, he had 43 tackles, five interceptions, eight passes defensed, a fumble recovery and a blocked punt and was named by the Washington Post as the D.C. Area Player of the Year.
  • New Orleans tackle/guard Jermon Bushrod prepped at King George (Va.) High School and starred at Towson, where he was recently named to their All-50th team.
  • Saints area scout Joey Vitt is a native of Towson, Md., who attended Towson.
  • New Orleans safety Kurt Coleman, wide receiver Ted Ginn Jr. and linebacker A.J. Klein played with Washington cornerback Josh Norman in Carolina.
  • New Orleans guard Josh LeRibeus was a third round draft pick of Washington in 2012 out of Southern Methodist and spent his first four NFL seasons with the club, appearing in 28 regular season games with 12 starts along the offensive line and appearing in two more postseason contests.
  • Washington strength and conditioning coach Chad Englehart is a New Orleans native who attended Southeastern Louisiana University and served on the strength staff at the University of New Orleans in 2006.
  • New Orleans center Max Unger and Washington wide receiver Paul Richardson were teammates in Seattle. Crawley and Richardson were college teammates at Colorado.
  • New Orleans linebacker Craig Robertson and Redskins quarterback Colt McCoy were teammates with the Cleveland Browns from 2011-12.
  • Saints cornerback P.J. Williams and Washington running back Chris Thompson were college teammates at Florida State.
  • New Orleans running back Daniel Lasco and Redskins wide receiver Maurice Harris were college teammates at the University of California.
  • Washington wide receivers coach Ike Hilliard prepped at Patterson High School and is the nephew of former Saints running back Dalton Hilliard. New Orleans Coach Sean Payton tutored Hilliard when he served as offensive coordinator of the New York Giants from 1999-2002. Payton and Washington assistant head coach/offensive Line Bill Callahan served on the same Philadelphia Eagles coaching staff from 1997-98.
  • Curry and Washington running backs coach Randy Jordan were teammates in Oakland in 2002. Curry played for Callahan when he served as Raiders head coach from 2002-03.
  • Saints defensive end Cameron Jordan played with Washington long snapper Nick Sundberg at the University of California.
  • Redskins tackle Ty Nsekhe spent the 2014 off season with the Saints.
  • New Orleans wide receiver Ted Ginn Jr. and Washington tight end Vernon Davis were teammates in San Francisco.
  • New Orleans pass rush specialist Brian Young and Washington tight ends coach Wes Phillips were college teammates at Texas- El Paso. Phillips is the grandson of former Saints Coach Bum Phillips (1981-85) and the son of former Saints defensive coordinator (1981-85) and interim head coach (final four games of 1985) Wade Phillips. Redskins defensive line coach Jim Tomasula and Manusky served on Nolan's coaching staff with the San Francisco 49ers from 2007-08. Curry served on the same 49ers staff with Tomasula 2013-14 and served on Tomasula's staff when he served as head coach in 2015.
  • New Orleans assistant special teams coach Kevin O'Dea and Washington defensive backs coach Torrian Gray served on the same coaching staff in Chicago from 2004-05. Nolan and Washington quarterbacks coach Matt Cavanaugh served on the same coaching staff with the Baltimore Ravens from 2001-04.
  • Saints assistant offensive line coach Brendan Nugent and Cavanaugh served on the same Chicago staff from 2013-14. O'Dea and Cavanaugh served on the same staff with the New York Jets in 2009.
