Five Things to Know about Saints quarterback Hunter Dekkers

New Orleans Saints Executive Vice President/General Manager Mickey Loomis announced Monday that the club has agreed to terms with undrafted free agent quarterback Hunter Dekkers on a one-year contract. Here are five things to know about the Saints roster addition:

  1. Dekkers finished his collegiate career at Iowa Western Community College where he helped the Reivers to an 11-2 record in the National Junior College Athletic Association. Dekkers completed 288 passes on 449 attempts (64.1%) for 3,806 yards and 32 touchdowns.
  2. Prior to that, Dekkers attended Iowa State. In three seasons with the Cyclones, he completed 327 passes of 457 attempts (66.1%) for 2,044 yards and 19 touchdowns. He also added 19 rushing attempts for 96 yards and four touchdowns.
  3. He attended West Sioux High School in his hometown of Hawarden, Iowa. His career with the Falcons led him to set Iowa high school career records with 10,628 passing yards and 126 passing touchdowns. He earned all-state honors three times and helped West Sioux to the playoffs in three seasons, including winning a state title in his sophomore year.
  4. The quarterback also punted for West Sioux in his final three seasons, averaging 38.4, 44.5, and 44.2 yards per punt.
  5. A multi-sport star in high school, Dekkers played baseball and basketball as well as football, earning all-state honors in all three. In basketball, he became his school's all-time leading scorer with 1,727 points, averaging 21.3 points per game as a senior which helped lead his team to the state tournament. In baseball, he hit .509 with a team-high 28 RBI as a junior as well as posted a 0.40 ERA in 52 innings pitched to lead team to the state semifinals.
