Saints add fifth-year veteran running back after tryout at Saints Minicamp

New Orleans Saints Executive Vice President/General Manager Mickey Loomis announced Friday that the club has signed free agent running back Cam Akers to a one-year contract after participating in minicamp on a tryout basis.

  1. Akers joins the Saints after splitting the 2024 season with the Minnesota Vikings and Houston Texans. In his first season back after recovering from a torn left Achilles in 2023, he played in all 17 games and accrued 104 carries for 444 yards and two touchdowns as well as 14 catches for 68 yards and three touchdowns. He also added six carries for 65 yards and two receptions in the Vikings playoff game against the Detroit Lions.
  2. Over his five years in the NFL, Akers has tallied 502 carries for 2,025 yards and 13 touchdowns as well as 52 receptions for 388 yards and four touchdowns in 53 career games (17 starts) with the Los Angeles Rams, Vikings and Texans. He has also played in seven playoff games (five starts) and racked up 432 rushing yards and two touchdowns as well as 13 receptions for 127 yards.
  3. In 2021, Akers suffered a torn right Achilles tendon ahead of training camp which was expected to end his season, however Akers recovered and returned to play in under six months returning for the final regular season game seeing brief action. Akers then played in all four playoff games, starting the final three, and racked up 67 carries for 172 yards and eight receptions for 76 yards helping the Rams to a victory in Super Bowl LVI.
  4. A second round draft pick (52nd overall) by the Rams in the 2020 NFL Draft, Akers finished his collegiate career with the Florida State University Seminoles with 2,874 yards and 27 rushing touchdowns in 36 games over three seasons. He also added 69 receptions for 486 yards with seven touchdowns. He ranks sixth in school history in rushing yards and total touchdowns.
  5. The Clinton, Mississippi native played quarterback for Clinton High School. He led the Arrows to a Class 6A state championship in 2016, the school's first ever state title in football. Akers finished his career with 8,140 passing yards and 78 passing touchdowns and 5,103 rushing yards and 71 rushing touchdowns.
