Not much went right for the New Orleans Saints in their second preseason game as they dropped a 34-0 decision to the Los Angeles Rams on Saturday at SoFi Stadium.
The Saints lost the turnover battle 3-0, had a dozen penalties, and the defense struggled to apply pressure and get off the field in a dispiriting loss to the Rams (2-0 preseason). The team's lone field-goal attempt, a 39-yarder by Tanner Brown, missed to the right.
Saints quarterback Spencer Rattler led a nice opening drive of the second half but his third-down pass was intercepted at the goal line and returned 100 yards by Alex Cook for a touchdown to make it 27-0 Rams. On the next possession, the Saints got inside the Rams' 10-yard but running back Ty Chandler lost a fumble at the 2-yard line.
Rattler finished 14 of 23 for 141 yards and the interception. He scrambled five times for 21 yards
Veteran Zach Wilson got the start at quarterback as the Saints rested their starters following two joint workouts this week in California. The former No. 2 overall pick was six of 12 for 55 yards with an interception in the first half.
Running back Kendre Miller got a lot of action early, carrying six times for 22 yards and returning a kickoff 29 yards. Running back C.J. Donaldson had three carries for 15 yards and caught three passes for 46 yards.
Penalties were an issue as the Saints were called for 12 for 96 yards, including being penalized for having 12 men on the field twice.
The Saints lost running back Devin Neal and tight end Moliki Matavaoto injury in the first half.
The Saints (0-2 in preseason) will return to New Orleans to prepare for their final preseason contest, Friday at the Dallas Cowboys. The team will have an open practice Wednesday night at Tulane's Yulman Stadium.
