On September 10, 2006 the New Orleans Saints kicked off their 40th regular season and first season under Coach Payton by defeating the Cleveland Browns 19-14.

During the victory, quarterback Drew Brees' first touchdown as a Saint was completed to former wide receiver Marques Colston.
