Fortner stepped in after McCoy's season was cut short

ERIK MCCOY AND LUKE FORTNER 2025 SEASON ANALYSIS

Saints center Erik McCoy began the season for the Saints as the team's starting center. He played in the first seven games and graded as the best pass blocking center in the league allowing zero sacks in 449 snaps according to Pro Football Focus. In the Saints Week 7 game against the Chicago Bears, McCoy sustained a biceps injury that would put him out of action for the remainder of the season, the second season in a row McCoy would be limited to six game.

Offensive lineman Luke Fortner stepped into the void in the middle, finishing the game against the Bears and starting the next 10 games, not missing a single offensive snap for the remainder of the season. Fortner continued the Saints strong performance at the position, grading as the seventh best pass blocking center in the league, allowing three sacks in 678 snaps according to Pro Football Focus. Fortner was also credited with a 95% pass block win rate according to ESPN, good for 18th among interior offensive lineman.

McCoy and the rest of the Saints offensive line shut out the New York Giants pass rush in Week 5. They kept quarterback Spencer Rattler upright allowing zero sacks and only four pressures in the game. It was the team's only game without a sack in the 2025 campaign. McCoy helped pave the way for 332 yards of total offense in a 26-14 victory, 244 passing and 88 rushing.

He’s one of our most impactful leaders on this team. Other guys are going to have an opportunity to fill that void on the field. I think Erik still has that presence to all these guys. No matter what capacity he’s in, he’ll do everything he can to help. I think the world of him. He’s been playing some phenomenal football.
