Game recap: Los Angeles Chargers 27, New Orleans Saints 13 | 2025 NFL Preseason Week 1

Check out the game action photos from the New Orleans Saints game against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 1 of the 2025 NFL preseason.

Inglewood, Calif. - The New Orleans Saints' opening preseason game against the Los Angeles Chargers gave Coach Kellen Moore plenty action to evaluate as he weighs which player he wants to open the season as the team's starting quarterback. The result Sunday at SoFi Stadium - a 27-13 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers - will be quickly forgotten as the team and coaching staff continue preparations for the 2025 season opener.

Spencer Rattler started at quarterback and played five possessions in the first half (all but one). The second-year pro out of South Carolina was seven of 11 for 53 yards and ran three times for 22 yards in his 28 snaps. He did lose a fumble on a sack but that was because of a breakdown in protection.

Tyler Shough, the team's second-round pick out of Louisville, led a field goal drive in a two-minute situation at the end of the first half and also connected on the team's only touchdown pass. He was 15 of 22 for 165 yards with a touchdown and a pick-six.

The 54-yard touchdown came on a beautiful double-move by receiver Mason Lipton which left him wide open running down the left side. The play came on the immediate possession after Shough threw a pick-six that covered 43 yards.

Quarterback Jake Haener played about the final five minutes of the game and was five of eight for 41 yards with an interception.

Running back Kendre Miller had six carries for 15 yards. Velus Jones led the team with four catches for 16 yards while Kevin Austin, Cedrick Wilson and Treyton Welch each had three catches. Kickers Blake Grupe and Charlie Smyth each made a field goal.

The Saints (0-1) had a number of players leave with injury: center Will Clapp (second offensive play), left guard Trevor Penning, wide receiver Bub Means, and tight end Mason Pline.

Khristian Boyd, Fadil Diggs and Chris Rumph each had sacks for the Saints defense.

The following players were not in uniform for the game: linebacker Demario Davis, defensive end Jasheen Davis, receiver Moochie Dixon, safety J.T. Gray, defensive end Cameron Jordan, running back Devin Neal (hamstring), receiver Chris Olave (ankle), cornerback Alontae Taylor, receiver Chris Tyree, and offensive lineman Landon Young.

The following players were in uniform but didn't play: defensive tackle Davon Godchaux, defensive end Carl Granderson, running back Alvin Kamara, and defensive end Chase Young.

The Saints will practice at Cal-Irvine through Thursday before returning to New Orleans ahead of Sunday's home preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The victory improved the Chargers to 2-0 in preseason.
