Halftime Update

Halftime update: Los Angeles Chargers 9, New Orleans Saints 3 | 2025 NFL Preseason Week 1

Quarterback Spencer Rattler plays most of first half but doesn't lead team to any points

Inglewood, Calif. - Walking an NFL sideline for the first time as coach of the New Orleans Saints, Kellen Moore got a nice long look at one of the candidates to be the team's starting quarterback as Spencer Rattler played through most of the second quarter Sunday at SoFi Stadium, getting five possessions leading the offense.

The second-year pro out of South Carolina was seven of 11 for 53 yards and ran three times for 22 yards in his 28 snaps. He did lose a fumble on a sack but that was because of a breakdown in protection.

On the offensive line, veteran center Erik McCoy was rested, giving Will Clapp the start along with Kelvin Banks, Trevor Penning, Cesar Ruiz and Taliese Fuaga. But Clapp left after the second play and was carted to the locker room with a lower body injury. Fuaga and Ruiz were subbed out later in the first quarter. Penning and Banks played into the second quarter but Penning did visit the injury tent after leaving the game.

Second-round draft pick Tyler Shough entered with 1:38 to play in the second quarter and led the team on a nice two-minute drive capped by a 31-yard field goal by kicker Blake Grupe. Shough was five of nine for 42 yards on the drive.

The Saints got a great chance to score after the Chargers fumbled a punt with Saints tight end Treyton Welch recovering at the 17-yard line. But running back Kendre Milller's fourth-and-goal run from the 1-yard line was stopped short at the 4-yard line. Miller had six carries for 15 yards and a nice kickoff return.

It looked like defensive tackle Khristian Boyd got the Saints on the scoreboard when he sacked Los Angeles quarterback Taylor Heinicke in the end zone for safety with 1:47 to play in the first quarter but the play was overturned on review resulting in just a sack for a 7-yard loss.

The Chargers entered halftime with a 9-3 lead as they scored on a 44-yard Cameron Dicker field goal with 13:30 to play and a 5-yard run by reserve quarterback Trey Lance (two-point attempt failed). He was very effective running the ball, carrying four times for 36 yards.

The following players were not in uniform for the game: linebacker Demario Davis, defensive end Jasheen Davis, receiver Moochie Dixon, safety J.T. Gray, defensive end Cameron Jordan, running back Devin Neal (hamstring), receiver Chris Olave (ankle), cornerback Alontae Taylor, receiver Chris Tyree, and offensive lineman Landon Young.

The following players were in uniform but didn't play: defensive tackle Davon Godchaux, defensive end Carl Granderson, running back Alvin Kamara, and defensive end Chase Young.
