This hard-working, talented and intelligent interior offensive lineman proved to be a match for New Orleans with the 24th overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. The three-year letterman appeared in 36 games in his college career for Michigan, making 31 consecutive starting assignments to finish his college career. After opening five contests as a freshman in 2017 at right guard, he was the team's center the past two seasons, earning All-Big Ten as a junior in 2019. Ruiz, who declared for the NFL Draft following his junior season, is expected to compete for snaps at both center and right guard.
A three-year contributor on Wisconsin's defense, the Brown Deer Wisc. native enjoyed a breakout redshirt senior campaign in 2019, when he was the first consensus (FWAA, Walter Camp) first-team All-American linebacker in Badgers history, when he started all 14 games and ranked second in the Big Ten in tackles for loss (19.5) and sacks (12.5). Overall in his college career, he played in 39 games with 27 starts, all which took place in his final two seasons, recording 154 tackles, 30.5 stops for loss, 15 sacks, two interceptions and three forced fumbles. He's the eleventh player selected by the Saints from Wisconsin.
The Saints were pleasantly surprised to find Trautman available near the end of the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft and made an aggressive trade up to the 105th overall pick to add him. A converted high school quarterback, the Michigan native moved to tight end almost immediately as a freshman developed into one of the top offensive players in NCAA FCS football, where he played in 44 games, recording career totals of 178 receptions for 2,295 yards (12.9 avg.) and 31 touchdowns.
New Orleans traded back into the draft to pick up this 6-5, 235-pound signal-caller, who spent his graduate transfer season at Mississippi State. In 2019 for the Bulldogs, he threw for 1,115 yards and 11 touchdowns and rushed for 381 yards and four scores. Prior to the 2019 season, the Indianapolis native spent four seasons at Penn State, where he contributed at multiple positions, a role which the Saints will try to develop him for in 2020.
