Notes from New Orleans Saints-Minnesota Vikings preseason game

Odds and ends from the Saints' 34-25 loss to the Vikings

Take a look at the action from the Mercedes-Benz Superdome as the New Orleans Saints take on the Minnesota Vikings in week 1 of the 2019 NFL preseason.

The New Orleans Saints dropped their 2019 preseason opener 34-25 to the Minnesota Vikings, starting the preseason 0-1 for the fourth time in the last five seasons. New Orleans will return to action Sunday, Aug. 18 when it plays the Los Angeles Chargers at Dignity Health Sports Park. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. CST and the contest will be nationally televised on CBS (WWL-4 locally).

The Saints finished with 337 total net yards, including 141 rushing yards and 196 passing yards. New Orleans was outgained on the ground and in the air; Minnesota finished with 213 rushing yards and 247 passing yards.

Quarterback Teddy Bridgewater started for New Orleans and played the entire first half, finishing 14-of-19 for 134 yards and one touchdown. Bridgewater completed passes to eight Saints receivers.

Running back Latavius Murray finished with three receptions for 22 yards as well as three rushes for 14 yards. 

Running back Dwayne Washington led New Orleans in carries, finishing with eight rushes for 36 yards, including a long of 12 yards.

Running back Jacquizz Rodgers finished with five carries for 15 yards and tied for the team lead in receptions, with three catches for 13 yards.

Bridgewater was 6-of-7 for 43 yards on the Saints' opening drive. The 14-play, 55- yard drive lasted 8:12 and resulted in a 27-yard field goal by Wil Lutz.

Lutz also converted field goals of 52, 26, and 42 yards and added one extra point, finishing 4-of-4 on field goals and 1-of-1 on extra-point attempts.

New Orleans capitalized on Vikings running back Ameer Abdullah's second quarter fumble, which was recovered by linebacker Vince Biegel, driving 79 yards on six plays and leading to an 18-yard touchdown pass from Bridgewater to tight end Dan Arnold. The Saints failed to convert the subsequent two-point conversion attempt.

Quarterback Taysom Hill played the entire second half and finished as the Saints' leading rusher, rushing for 45 yards on six carries. Hill led New Orleans on three scoring drives and finished with 80 yards on 8-of-14 passing.

Reeciver Lil'Jordan Humphrey scored the Saints' second touchdown on a 33-yard reception from Hill. The scored capped off a five-play, 83-yard drive.

Linebacker Demario Davis, defenisve tackl Taylor Stallworth and safety J.T. Gray led New Orleans' defense with four tackles each.

Running back Devine Ozigbo rushed for 20 yards on three carries and added a reception for nine yards.

Defensive end Trey Hendrickson recorded the Saints' lone quarterback hit and added one tackle.

New Orleans defensive end Mario Edwards Jr., linebacker Kaden Elliss, and linebacker Craig Robertson each recorded one pass defense. Elliss added three tackles, and Edwards and Robertson added two apiece.

Deonte Harris returned three kickoffs for 90 yards (30.0 average) and a long of 34 yards. Receiver Cyril Grayson Jr. returned two kickoffs for a total of 61 yards (30.5 avg) and a long of 40.

In New Orleans' first game under the NFL's new rule allowing coach's challenges on pass interference calls, Minnesota and New Orleans challenged pass interference calls. Vikings Coach Mike Zimmer challenged for a possible New Orleans offensive pass interference on a reception by running back Alvin Kamara in the first quarter and Saints Coach Sean Payton challenged a third quarter defensive pass interference call on cornerback Kayvon Webster. Both calls on the field were upheld.

Minnesota and New Orleans accounted for 209 penalty yards on 21 penalties.
