New Orleans Saints announce roster moves

The New Orleans Saints announced today that they have signed S Rickey Jefferson and TE John Phillips, waived/injured OL John Fullington, terminated/failed physical WR Brandon Coleman and reached injury settlements with WRs Eldridge Massington and Josh Smith. The announcements were made by Saints' Executive Vice President/General Manager Mickey Loomis.

Phillips, 6-5 251, first joined New Orleans in Week 10 off of waivers from the Denver Broncos in 2016, going on to appear in eight games with four starts for the Saints in 2016, catching five passes for 32 yards. Overall in 16 games with seven starts for both Denver and New Orleans combined, he posted 10 receptions for 72 yards with one touchdown grab. In 2017, he appeared in one regular season contest for the Saints.

Overall, in his eight-year NFL career, Phillips has appeared in 112 games with 39 starts, posting 55 receptions for 390 yards with five touchdowns and 33 special teams tackles during stints with the Dallas Cowboys (2009-12), San Diego Chargers (2013-15), Broncos (2016) and Saints (2016-17). The Low Moore, Va. native was originally a sixth round (208th overall) pick in the 2009 NFL Draft by the Cowboys out of the University of Virginia.

Jefferson, 5-11, 208, returns to New Orleans after spending part of the 2018 offseason with the club. He was originally signed by the Oakland Raiders as an undrafted free agent out of LSU in 2017 and spent training camp with the club. The former Destrehan High School standout spent four years at LSU, playing in 37 games with 15 starts and totaling 87 career tackles (48 solo), one sack, four interceptions and 12 passes defensed
