Chevron and the Saints continued to show their commitment to the development and education of our children by recognizing Teacher of the Week Justin Burkhardt from St. Bernard Parish during pregame of the Saints-Panthers contest.
"It's a culmination of hard work and effort from both me and my students every year," Burkhardt said. "This is a payoff. It's a great reward."
Burkhardt is the eighth grade Louisiana Social Studies teacher at Andrew Jackson Middle School in his hometown of Chalmette. To keep students engaged in their lessons, he uses the "Socratic Seminar" technique which challenges them to cultivate their critical thinking skills and provides an opportunity for them to argue their opinions about the topics discussed.
Burkhardt earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Secondary Education from Southeastern Louisiana University and is currently pursuing a degree in Educational Administration from the University of New Orleans.
Burkhardt feels strongly about the impression he leaves on his students.
"I just want my students to be conscientious citizens," he said. "As a social studies teacher, I want them to vote. I want them to be productive in today's society.
