NFL CAREER – Over his first four seasons, Mitchell’s established himself as one of the Saints’ top special teams performers, while also playing a key role in the club’s linebacker rotation. The aggressive, downhill defender has 55 stops on coverage units since joining the Saints. Because of his strength and sure tackling, the former seventh-round draft choice has also appeared in the Saints’ goal-line and 3-4 defensive packages, posting a career-high 38 tackles along with one sack, three pass defenses, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries in 2010.

2010 – Played in all 16 games for the first time and finished with 38 tackles, one sack, three pass defenses, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries, setting career-highs in all defensive categories…Added 13 special teams tackles…Started in NFC Wild Card Playoff at Seattle, 1/8/11 and made one tackle…Made three tackles, one pass defense, forced a fumble and recovered another at Tampa Bay, Oct. 17…Made a key fourth quarter strip of Steelers TE Heath Miller to help ice game vs. Pittsburgh, Oct. 31, as he also made two tackles and another special teams stop…Recorded five solo tackles and notched his first career sack as he ran QB Joe Flacco out of bounds for a four-yard loss, to go with one special teams stop at Baltimore, Dec. 19…Goal line fumble recovery at Atlanta, Dec. 27, helped save a touchdown. Also made three tackles, a pass defense and one special teams stop. 2009 – Played in 14 games  with first two career starts…Inactive for games 12 and 13 due to hamstring injury…Recorded career-highs in defensive tackles and special teams stops, making 24 tackles (16 solo) and 16 coverage stops…Appeared in all three postseason games, starting Super Bowl XLIV in a 3-4 set, making four tackles (two solo) and one special teams stop…Made his first NFL start at ILB in a 3-4 set in opener vs. Detroit, Sept. 13 and made three special teams tackles…Had two solo tackles and tied career-high with three special teams stops vs. NY Giants, Oct. 18…Started at MLB in regular season finale at Carolina, 1/3/10 and posted a career-high nine tackles (four solo), two for a loss and added a special teams stop.  2008 – Played in 15 games primarily on special teams, declared inactive at Tampa Bay, Nov. 30…Recorded 15 special teams tackles…Had a goal line stop at Kansas City, Nov. 16. Also had three special teams tackles against the Chiefs, tying career-high. 2007 – Played in 10 games after starting season on the practice squad, inactive for three contests, and recorded 11 tackles on special teams…Signed to active roster, Oct. 6, and made NFL debut against Carolina the next day, making a special teams tackle…Notched season-best three special teams stops vs. Arizona, Dec. 16.

COLLEGE – A team captain as a senior, playing in 40 games (15 starts) during career, finishing with 154 stops…Led Volunteers in 2006 with 104 stops, adding three pass defenses and a two forced fumbles…Started all 13 contests and voted permanent team captain for final eight games…Played in 11 games as junior with two starts… Sat out 2004 on medical redshirt, suffering knee injury in previous year’s bowl practice…Played in all 12 games as sophomore, primarily on special teams…Played in four games, notching eight tackles as a true freshman.

PERSONAL – Attended Virginia Pilot (Norfolk, Va.) HS…All-district as both TE and LB and senior co-MVP…Caught 29 passes for 500 yards and had six interceptions, five sacks and 131 tackles as senior…Also played basketball, ran track and threw shot put.
