After being hampered by an injured hamstring in his first season in New Orleans, a healthy and sure-tackling David Hawthorne moved to the inside and played an important role in a reconfigured and significantly improved defense. The former Texas Christian standout came to New Orleans in the 2012 offseason from Seattle, where he was originally signed as an undrafted free agent in 2008. In his second season with the club, he appeared in all 16 games with 15 starts and finished second on the club with a career-high 128 tackles (68 solo), three sacks, one pass defensed, one forced fumble and three special teams stops. Overall in his six-year NFL career, Hawthorne has played in 88 games with 66 starts and has totaled 507 tackles (328 solo), nine sacks, seven interceptions, one returned for a touchdown, 16 passes defensed, five forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and 18 special teams tackles.

2013 – Claimed a more significant role alongside Curtis Lofton on the interior of the Saints defense, finishing second on the team to him with a career-high 128 tackles (68 solo), three sacks, one forced fumble and three special teams stops. Helped the Saints post one of the league’s top defenses in 2013, as they ranked fourth in both opponent net yards per game (305.7) and scoring defense (19.0). Recorded double-digit tackles in four regular season games and one postseason contest.
