He brings 26 years of experience of coaching to his post, including 22 years at the college level prior to joining the Saints in 2008.

Serving as assistant secondary coach in 2011, Mallory helped tutor a unit where safeties Roman Harper (1160 and Malcolm Jenkins (97) had the top two tackling totals on the team, while Harper’s 7.5 sacks led the team and was the second-highest total by an NFL defensive back since sacks were recognized as an official statistic in 1982. Among the cornerbacks that Mallory tutored, Jabari Greer had a career-high 83 tackles and 23 pass defenses, while Patrick Robinson led the saints with four interceptions in his second season.

From 2008-10, Mallory assisted McMahon in the tutoring of the Saints special teams units. He assisted in the development of K Garrett Hartley and P Thomas Morstead. Hartley has made 85.7% of his field goal attempts since joining the club in 2008. Morstead, a 2009 fifth round draft choice, improved both his gross (45.9) and net (38.4) punting averaged in 2010 to finish among league leaders.

Mallory spent 2007 at the University of Louisville, where he served as secondary coach. He spent the previous season at Kansas coaching the linebackers, and the five years before (2001-05) as an assistant at Illinois, including his final two as defensive coordinator/ linebackers.

Mallory coached the Illinois linebackers in 2003 after spending his previous two years working with the safeties. For four seasons, Mallory and McMahon were on the same staff at Illinois, and Mallory, as now, assisted McMahon with preparing the special teams units.

During his career, Mallory also coached the inside linebackers at Maryland (2000) and was the defensive coordinator/linebackers coach at Northern Illinois (1996-99) and the University of Rhode Island (1993-95).

Mallory had a standout career as a linebacker at the University of Michigan. He was a two-time All-Big 10 selection and two-year captain. He was a finalist for the 1985 Butkus Award – given to the nation’s premier linebacker – and voted his team’s MVP in 1984. Mallory played in four bowl games and graduated with a degree in sports administration.

Mallory is from a distinguished football family. He is the son of Bill Mallory, who has served as a head coach at Indiana, Colorado, Northern Illinois and Miami University (Ohio). Mike’s youngest brother, Curt, is currently the secondary coach at the University of Michigan, and brother, Doug, is the defensive coordinator/assistant head coach at Indiana University.

Mallory and his wife, Kim, have a daughter, Kathryn, and a son, William.
