Scouting the Eagles: A look at their special teams

Posted Jan 3, 2014

Will Eagles use dangerous DeSean Jackson in return game?

Philadelphia Eagles kicker Nick Henery made 23 of 28 field-goal attempts during the regular season, with a long of 51 yards. Punter Donnie Jones is a 10-year veteran out of LSU, and averaged 44.9 yards per punt and a net of 40.5 yards, with 33 of his 82 punts downed inside the 20.

This season in the return game, the Eagles have used receiver DeSean Jackson less (14 punt returns for 71 yards, one kickoff return for 10 yards) as his role as a receiver has expanded (82 catches for 1,332 yards and nine touchdowns). However, Jackson entered the season with four punt returns for touchdowns, and was a Pro Bowl punt returner in 2009, when the led the league with a 15.2-yard average.

This year, receiver Demaris Johnson (12 punt returns for 100 yards, 17 kickoff returns for a 25.9-yard average) has been the main returner. The Eagles coverage units have been suspect; opponents averaged 8 yards per punt return, with one touchdown, and 23.6 yards per kickoff return, with two scores.
