Scouting the Eagles: A look at their offense

Posted Jan 1, 2014

Saints, Eagles play Saturday at 7:10 p.m.

There isn’t much snickering now about whether Chip Kelly could transfer his offensive philosophy from Oregon (up-tempo, fast break) to Philadelphia and the NFL.

The Eagles, under the rookie head coach, set a franchise record for points (442), total yards (6,676) and touchdowns (53), and led the NFL in rush offense (160.4 yards per game). The leader of the rushing attack is LeSean “Shady” McCoy (314 carries for an NFL-high and franchise-record 1,607 yards, and nine touchdowns).

playoff bracketSecond-year quarterback Nick Foles (203 of 317 for 2,891 yards and 27 touchdowns, with two interceptions, and a league-leading quarterback rating of 119.2) and receivers DeSean Jackson (82 catches for 1,332 yards and nine touchdowns) and Riley Cooper (47-835-8), and tight end Brent Celek (32-502-6) combine for a formidable passing attack.

The Eagles prefer to run plays within 20 seconds or less, and they do a good job of preventing defensive substitutions by keeping their own offensive package of players on the field. Foles was sacked 27 times in his 10 starts (28 times overall), so opponents have been able to get to him.
