8. Saints Clinch First Division Title
The 1991 Saints started hot under head coach Jim Mora, winning their first seven games to open the season. After a 9-1 start, the Saints slowed down and lost four consecutive contests, three of which were played on the road. In the last game of the regular season, the Saints traveled to Sun Devil Stadium to take on the Phoenix Cardinals. On December 22, 1991, the Saints defeated the Cardinals 27-3 and clinched their 1st-ever NFC West title. The Saints finished with an 11-5 record while allowing the fewest points in the league. The defense was also ranked 2nd in yards allowed. LBs Vaughan Johnson, Sam Mills, and Pat Swilling all were named to the Pro Bowl with teammate ST Bennie Thompson. In the NFC Wild Card Playoff round, the Saints were defeated in a come-from-behind win by division opponent the Atlanta Falcons, 20-27.
