The Greatest Moments in Saints History- No. 4

Posted Aug 1, 2012

NewOrleansSaints.com is counting down the top ten greatest moments in Saints history leading up to the Hall of Fame game.

4.  Hartley Sends the Saints to the Super Bowl

In 2009, the Saints had advanced to the NFC Championship game and were set to take on Brett Favre and the Minnesota Vikings in the Superdome on January 24, 2010. The game was tied with little time left in the fourth quarter and Favre was working on a game-winning drive. He was flushed from the pocket and threw to a receiver cross-field. The ball was intercepted by Saints CB Tracy Porter at the Saints 22-yard line. Porter clinched a chance at overtime and New Orleans won the coin toss. Brees, who finished with 197 yards and three touchdowns, guided the team down the field with help from Pierre Thomas who leaped over the line to convert on a vital fourth-and-one. Kicker Garrett Hartley, who had not played for most of the regular season, lined up to take a 40-yard field goal to win the game. Hartley split the uprights giving the Saints a 31-28 victory and a matchup with the Indianapolis Colts in Super Bowl XLIV in Miami. With the win, the Saints became the first home team to win a conference championship game in overtime. At the time, the crowd of 71,276 was the largest in attendance for a Saints game in the Superdome.
