New Orleans Saints vs Carolina Panthers: Notebook

The Saints fell to the Panthers 13-17

*New Orleans’ record falls to 10-5 and the Saints will battle the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-11) next Sunday at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. Kickoff is 12:00 p.m.

*Quarterback Drew Brees completed 30 of 44 passes for 281 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. He also carried once for nine yards. Brees completed passes to 10 players.

*Wide receiver Marques Colston caught five passes for 63 yards, including a second quarter 35-yard grab. Colston, the club’s leading all-time receiver, extended his career receptions total to 601.

*Wide receiver Kenny Stills had two receptions for 23 yards including a third quarter 19-yard grab.

*Wide receiver Lance Moore finished with three catches for 47 yards.

*Running back Mark Ingram carried 13 times for 83 yards (6.4 avg.), including a 34-yard rush in the second quarter, also adding a seven-yard reception.

*Fullback Jed Collins carried three times for eight yards, including converting a third-and-one attempt in the third quarter. He also had two receptions for three yards.

*Tight end Jimmy Graham had five receptions for 73 yards, including a fourth quarter 46-yard grab and five-yard touchdown catch to put New Orleans ahead 13-10. Graham now has 296 career receptions, surpassing running back Reggie Bush for sixth place on the club’s all-time list. On the season, Graham has 81 receptions for 1,144 yards with a franchise-record 15 touchdowns, the second-highest total for a tight end in NFL record books. Graham also has 3,792 career receiving yards as he surpassed wide receiver Quinn Early to move into eighth place in club record books.

*Tight end Benjamin Watson had two receptions for 26 yards. New Orleans Saints

*Guard Jahri Evans appeared in his 125th career game, moving out of a tie with wide receiver Devery Henderson and into sole possession of 23rd on the club’s all-time games played list.

*The New Orleans defense held Carolina to 0-of-nine on third down conversion attempts and surrendered only 141 net passing yards to the Panthers.

*Defensive end Cameron Jordan’s second quarter third down sack of Newton forced Carolina to punt. Jordan finished with five tackles (one solo).

*Outside linebacker Junior Galette had a third quarter sack to extend his career-high total to 10. He joins teammate defensive end Cameron Jordan as the first Saints duo with double digit sacks since defensive ends Darren Howard (11) and Charles Grant (10.5) in 2004. Galette also had two tackles for a loss in the contest, including a stop of Panthers running back DeAngelo Williams for one yard in the same third quarter drive.

*Defensive end Akiem Hicks led New Orleans with five tackles (two solo) and added a fourth quarter sack of Newton.

*Inside linebacker Curtis Lofton sacked Newton for a loss of 11 yards, also recording two solo tackles on the day. Lofton tied the career-high he set in 2010 with the Atlanta Falcons for takedowns.

*Safety Malcolm Jenkins had an interception on Carolina’s first possessions at New Orleans 10-yard line that he returned four yards. Jenkins has also had three tackles (two solo) and one pass defense. The pick was his second of the season, tying the career-high he first set in 2010.

*Safety Roman Harper made the 107th appearance of his NFL career, tying him for 37th all-time in club record books with linebacker Pat Swilling and safety Gene Atkins. Harper finished with three solo tackles.

*In making his Saints regular season debut, kicker Shayne Graham booted a 40-yard field goal in the second quarter to give New Orleans a 3-0  lead. He also booted a 24-yard field goal.

*Punter Thomas Morstead successfully executed an onside kick in the second quarter that was recovered by inside linebacker Ramon Humber. Morstead also punted seven times for 340 yards and a 48.6 average including a second quarter 61-yard boot and two punts landed inside the Carolina 20-yard line.
