New Orleans Saints Executive Vice President/General Manager Mickey Loomis announced Tuesday that the club has promoted Terry Fontenot to director of pro scouting and have named Jason Mitchell as an area scout and Paul Zimmer as college scouting coordinator.
Fontenot, entering his 11th season with the Saints, will oversee the club’s pro scouting department. His responsibilities on a daily basis will include recommending player acquisitions by evaluating players from the NFL and other professional leagues, including the Saints roster, monitoring the waiver wire and supervising the advance scouting of upcoming opponents.
For the last seven seasons, he has served as a pro scout after previously holding multiple positions in the player personnel department.
The Lake Charles, La. native was a four-year letterman at safety for Tulane from 1999-2002, serving as a team captain for the Green Wave. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business and organizational information technology.
Mitchell will be responsible for evaluating players from colleges throughout the Midwest in his new position. He first joined the Saints in 2007 as the club’s college scouting coordinator and was responsible for maintaining the day-to-day operations of the college scouting department, in addition to being involved in the scouting and evaluation of college players nationally.
The Cresskill, N.J. native came to the Saints after serving as the director of external operations at Rutgers University from 2005-07. An undergraduate scouting assistant for the Scarlet Knights, Mitchell graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sports management.
Zimmer moves into the college scouting department after serving as a video assistant since 2010. He will be responsible for maintaining the department’s day-to-day operations regarding scouts’ scheduling, processing and organizing the information gathered on draft-eligible players and maintaining a computer database of scouting reports. Zimmer graduated from Northwest Missouri State University in 2007 with a bachelor’s degree in marketing.
