New Orleans Saints Executive Vice President/General Manager Mickey Loomis announced Monday that the club has signed the following free agents to contracts following their participation in the club’s rookie minicamp on a tryout basis: DE Baraka Atkins, WR Brent Leonard, DB Korey Lindsey, K Jose Maltos, RB Khiry Robinson and G Jeremiah Warren. Atkins, 6-foot-4, 265-pounds, is a two-year NFL veteran who was originally selected by the Seattle Seahawks in the fourth round (120th overall) of the 2007 NFL Draft. Atkins appeared in 21 games in two seasons for the Seahawks and posted 28 tackles (19 solo), two sacks, one pass defense and two fumble recoveries. Most recently, the Sarasota, Fla. native participated in training camp with the Dallas Cowboys in 2012. The two-time All-ACC honorable mention selection finished his career at the University of Miami (Fla.) with totals of 175 tackles, 18 sacks, nine passes defensed, five forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries, including one for a touchdown, in 49 games with 45 starts along the defensive line.
Leonard, a rookie from Lousiana-Monroe, is a 6-foot-2, 186-pound wideout who set a Warhawks career record with 209 receptions. This followed a senior campaign for the former walk-on that concluded with him finishing with a school-record 104 receptions for 1,118 yards and 10 touchdowns as he became the first ULM player in 10 seasons to go over the 1,000 yard receiving mark.
Lindsey is a 5-foot-10, 194-pound defensive back who was originally a seventh round draft pick of the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2011 NFL Draft. The Baton Rouge native has spent part of the last two seasons on the active rosters of the Arizona Cardinals and Indianapolis Colts while also participating on the practice squads of the Cardinals, Jacksonville Jaguars and Washington Redskins. Lindsey played in 50 career games at Southern Illinois with 36 starts and completed his career with 14 interceptions, ranked third in school history, while attaining first-team FCS Associated Press All-American honors as both a junior and senior.
Maltos is a 5-foot-9, 201-pound native of Monterrey, Mexico, who played at the University of Nueva-Leon from 2009-12. He auditioned for NFL scouts at Southern Methodist University’s Pro Day prior to the NFL Draft and also participated in a postseason all-star game comprised of Mexican and American college players.
Robinson is a 6-foot, 220-pound runner, who in two seasons at West Texas A&M after transferring from Blinn (Texas) Junior College rushed for 2,290 yards and 26 touchdowns and caught 60 passes for 612 yards and six touchdowns. In 2012, the Belton, Texas native was named to the D2Football.com All-America team as he led the Buffaloes and Lone Star Conference with a school-record 1,621 yards on the ground with 15 touchdowns, while also adding 38 receptions for 430 yards and four touchdowns.
Warren is a 6-foot-4, 320-pound offensive lineman who spent the majority of his rookie season in 2012 on the practice squad of the New England Patriots before joining the Arizona Cardinals for the majority of the 2013 offseason. Warren started the final 38 games of his college career, while appearing in 45 overall at South Florida, and was named to the All-Big East second-team as a senior after starting all 12 games at guard.
