Matt Prater sets record for NFL’s longest field goal at 64 yards

Posted Dec 8, 2013

Former New Orleans Saints kicker Tom Dempsey shared the previous record with three other players

Former New Orleans Saints kicker Tom Dempsey's NFL record for longest field goal (63 yards), which was shared by three other players, was broken by Denver Broncos kicker Matt Prater on Sunday as Prater booted a 64-yard field goal at the end of the first half of the team's game against the Tennessee Titans at Sports Authority Field at Mile High.

Along with Dempsey, the previous record of 63 yards was shared with Jason Elam, Sebastian Janikowski and David Akers.

Dempsey, who kicked for the Saints in 1969 and 1970, booted the 63-yard field goal on Nov. 8, 1970 as time expired to give the Saints a 19-17 win over the Detriot Lions at Tulane Stadium.

Dempsey was a Pro Bowl selection from the Saints in 1969. He was inducted into the Saints Hall of Fame in 1989.
