Keenan Lewis ready to establish chemistry with revamped New Orleans Saints secondary

Posted Jul 14, 2014

New Orleans native enters second season with the Black and Gold

New Orleans Saints cornerback Keenan Lewis led the squad in interceptions (four) and helped the secondary finish second in the NFL in pass defense (194.1 yards allowed per game) last season.

The Crescent City native is “OK” with those numbers but to him it leaves plenty of room to improve.

“You’re always looking to get better,” said Lewis at his foundation’s football camp on Saturday. “Rod (Sweeting) and I have been working out a lot together - trying to get better and bigger. That was a goal of mine this summer - to get stronger, particularly my leg strength.”

Not only Lewis but also the entire secondary group improved its strength this offseason with the additions of star free agents Jairius Byrd and Champ Bailey. Byrd's interception total (22) over the past five seasons with the Buffalo Bills ranks second in the NFL. Bailey’s 52 career interceptions lead all active players.

“We made some great moves – especially bringing in guys like Jairius Byrd and Camp Bailey,” said Lewis. “Those type of players that have been in the league for quite some time and understand how to win.”

Lewis started all 16 regular season contests last year recording 40 tackles (33 solo), a career-high and team-best four interceptions, tied for 11th in the NFL, and nine passes defensed.

With his intense offseason training, the secondary additions and more familiarity in defensive coordinator Rob Ryan’s system, Lewis is anxious to see how the secondary gels together at camp.

“I am very excited about where we are headed,” said Lewis. “Only time will tell it’s going to be a lot of fun working with group as we try to bring a championship back to this city.”
