Burnell Taylor is anxious to perform the national anthem for the Monday night game against the Miami Dolphins. The New Orleans native came in seventh place during last year’s 12th season of American Idol.

Taylor, who graduated from Sarah T. Reed High School in 2011, hails from a musical family but it wasn’t until after Hurricane Katrina that he discovered his talent in singing. He first performed during a talent show. “Ever since then I haven’t stopped singing,” said Taylor.

He auditioned for American Idol in Baton Rouge, La. and received a standing ovation from the judges along with a ticket to Hollywood but was voted off after his top seven performance of “You Give Love a Bad Name” by Bon Jovi. Even though Taylor did not win the competition he is pleased with the outcome.

“Truthfully, I didn’t really want to win,” Taylor said. “I just wanted the platform and for people to know who I am. Being on the show, really gave me a lot of opportunities. A lot of doors opened. I’m so thankful for the show.”

Taylor is focusing on his writing and singing career and making the most out of the opportunities that are presented to him. A week after he sings that national anthem in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, Taylor will open for Grammy Award-winning India.Arie at the House of Blues in New Orleans.
