25 Reasons to Get Excited about 2013 Saints Training Camp Presented by Verizon: No. 10 Curtis Lofton

Posted Jul 16, 2013

NewOrleansSaints.com will showcase one reason a day to get excited about the start of the 2013 New Orleans Saints Training Camp presented by Verizon. Reason No. 10 – Curtis Lofton

Curtis Lofton joined the Saints prior to the 2012 season as an unrestricted free agent. Lofton spent his first four seasons in Atlanta after being drafted by the Falcons in the second round (37th overall) of the 2008 NFL Draft.

The linebacker has started 79 of the 80 games in his career and totaled 734 tackles (481 solo), five sacks, three interceptions, nine forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and 25 passes defensed.

During the 2012 campaign, Lofton captained the defense from the middle linebacker position, starting 16 games at middle linebacker and leading the team in tackles with 157 (94 solo), also adding one sack, 10 passes defensed, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.  Lofton’s 157 stops registered as the highest total by a Saints defender since 1997.

This season will be Lofton’s and first under Coach Sean Payton and Defensive Coordinator Rob Ryan.

Lofton on Lofton (April 1, 2013):

“I go back and study my film and look at every play I can improve on. There are a few things that I am focused on right now. I feel like I want to play with more power and explosiveness. I have been really focusing on those areas. Mainly I like to watch my own film, but in order to be a better player, you have to know what your weaknesses are and you want to pick small things from other players’ game.”
