Atlanta Travel Guide

Getting to Atlanta

There is one international airport, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, located 10 miles from downtown. There are 13 rental car agencies. You can also hail a cab from Hartsfield to downtown or Midtown for around $30 and to Buckhead for around $40. Be persistent and insist on being charged only the flat rate when using a taxi from the airport. For public transportation, hop on MARTA located at the airport right off baggage claim. You can be downtown within 20 minutes and one-way fares are only $2.50. If you prefer driving, New Orleans to Atlanta will take you approximately eight hours. The easiest route is Interstate 10 E to I-65 N to I-85 N. For those who don’t want to drive but want to enjoy the scenic ride, opt for a train. AMTRAK has trains leaving daily from New Orleans at 7 a.m. and arriving in Atlanta at 7:35 p.m. For tickets and more information, visit here.

Getting to Mercedes Benz Stadium

If you choose to drive, Mercedes Benz Stadium suggests downloading and using the waze app for the best route on game day.

    Georgia Aquarium
    Atlanta is home to one of the world’s largest aquariums. Located right in the heart of downtown at 225 Baker St. NW, 30313, it houses more than 100,000 animals, representing 500 species all of which reside in 10 million gallons of water.     World of Coca-Cola
    Home of the permanent exhibition featuring the history of The Coca-Cola Company - including its well-known advertising - as well as a host of entertainment areas and attractions.     Centennial Olympic Park
    Located at 265 Park Ave. W Northwest, 30313, is a 21-acre public park. The park was built by the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games as part of the infrastructure improvements for the Centennial 1996 Summer Olympics. Be sure to see the famous Fountain of Rings and visit the website for any upcoming events.

    Atlanta Botanical Garden
    A 30 acre botanical garden located in Midtown, 1345 Piedmont Ave NE, 30309. Experience lively sculptures filled with imagination, including a 25-foot Earth Goddess. (404) 876-5859.

    Zoo Atlanta
    This 40-acre zoo located at 800 Cherokee Ave. SE, 30315, is home to 1,500 animals from 220 species. Go visit the giant panda twins, Mei Lun and Mei Huan, who are the first twins born in the U.S. since 1987.

    Martin Luther King, Jr., National Historic Site
    Established in 1980, consists of several buildings surrounding Martin Luther King, Jr.’s boyhood home. Come visit the home of his birth and hear his voice in the church where he moved hearts and minds. Located at 450 Auburn Ave. NE, 30312. (404) 331-5190.

    CNN Center
    The world headquarters of CNN, main newsrooms and studios for several of CNN’s news channels are located in the building. Inside is a full food court and restaurants, perfect for grabbing lunch or dinner before a game. Located at 384 Northyards Blvd. NW #490, 30313.

    High Museum of Art
    The leading art museum in the Southeastern U.S. with a collection of classic and contemporary art and award-winning architecture by Richard Meier. The High Museum holds more than 14,000 works of art in its permanent collection, and in 2010 had 509,000 visitors, 95th among world art museums. Located at 1280 Peachtree St. NE, 30309.     Phipps Plaza
    Located off of GA 400 at the intersection of Peachtree and Lenox roads, right in the heart of Buckhead with quick and convenient access to Midtown and Downtown Atlanta. Boasts 100+ stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue, Nordstrom, Belk, Tiffany & Co., Gucci and more.     The Varsity
    The world’s largest drive-in restaurant and has been serving customers in Atlanta since 1928. People travel from all over the world to be asked, “What’ll ya have?” Located at 61 North Ave. NW, 30308.

    Sweetwater Brewery
    Enjoy a tour of how Sweetwater beer came about. Tours and tastings are held Wednesday to Friday from 5:30-7:30, Saturday and Sunday 2:30-4:30. You don’t even have to spend a dime; complementary tasting cups with six tasting tickets are free. However, for $10 you can get a souvenir pint glass along with six tasting tickets.     Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) is Atlanta’s top option for public transportation. A one-day pass can be purchased for $9 and a 3-day pass can be purchased for $16.
